Over the next fortnight we have the intriguing work Bridge Buildings and the Shipshape by the acclaimed architect Peter Wilson currently on show in the long cabinet display cases in the Design Lounge.
Jasper Brown, of Jasper Brown Architects and adjunct senior teaching fellow at the Abedian School of Architecture at Bond University, suggested the book be displayed in APDL declaring it is a ‘must-see’ for architecture students.
“I know from experience that this intact 1980s Architectural Association (AA in the UK) box set of drawings is not an easy thing to track down,” explained Jasper.
“Indeed I was very surprised when I found out that SLQ had a complete copy, and even more surprised when I was allowed to borrow it for two months!”
Bridge Buildings and the Shipshape was published to coincide with an exhibition at the AA from 6 November to 6 December 1984.
According to Jasper, the contents are a record of some of the late 1970s and early 1980s post-student work of the 2013 Australian Institute of Architects Gold Medal recipient Peter Wilson (of Bolles Wilson Architects based in Germany).
“The work was done before and during the time that he taught in the Diploma School at the AA,” said Jasper.
“The drawings are as delicate and atmospheric as they are inventive and seminal. The text is also very informative.”
If you are interested in architecture and civic design, do yourself a favour and visit the APDL Design Lounge to see this rare work in SLQ’s collection.
