Be seduced by the alluring glow of neon.
The Design Lounge on level 2 will be luminescent when we flick on the lights for The Salon Electric, a celebration of neon signs in Queensland and the Asia Pacific.
We will look at the process of making neon, its relationship to night life subculture and its latter-day resurgence in contemporary art and design.
Visit the Design Lounge to see Mr Fourex’s beer, the old Kookaburra Café sign and more; alongside photographs, ephemera and books from SLQ’s collection.
There will be a number of neon-themed events during the exhibition such as films, neon demonstration/workshop and twilight neon-walking tour. More details will be released in the coming weeks.
We are also encouraging neon-lovers to pin their own photos via Historypin to join our quest to track the story of neon in Queensland. We are looking for both contemporary and historical Queensland neon photos that you may wish to share from your very own photo album.
Plus, join us for the Queensland premiere screening of NEON a film that celebrates the beauty, colour and vibrant history of the neon sign from an international perspective. Book your tickets here.
