Opening this Saturday!

Some final install words from Elisa Carmichael, curator

For the last week or two, I have spent the better part of each day in the walls of kuril dhagun, moving works, hanging pieces and generally getting the artworks all ready for the opening. The last week has been the most fun and it’s been really nice having the time to recreate the studio space that the women work in Woorabinda.

It’s been pleasure working with their work and seeing it come alive in a gallery setting.

One of my favorite pieces in the exhibition is the NAIDOC dress. It greets you as you enter the space but I really like the way it sits on the body and the different shapes of the dress itself. It makes you want to look at it from all different angles.

This has been the first Community Exhibition I have curated as part of my role here in kuril dhagun and I have been very blessed to have been able to have the opportunity to work with the Women from Woorabinda. Working directly with community, traveling out to Woorabinda and having the responsibility of working with the community has been one of the favorite things about this whole experience.

Hardest part – was keeping an eye on all the works, the amount of pieces I was working with, but it all came together

kuril dhagun’s Community Exhibition program gives community an opportunity to profile their work in a gallery setting, in kuril dhagun and also it provides them with some knowledge of how an exhibition works and lets them know we are here for them as well.

People should come and see Renewed by Gumbi Crew to not only learn about Woorabinda and where it is, what it looks like, learn about the place and the women’s wellbeing centre but also come to share the women’s stories and support their artwork.

Renewed by Gumbi Crew opens on Saturday 13th June and will be in kuril dhagun, level 1 at the State Library of Queensland until the 4th October 2015.
