Welcome Christina Canendo
Christina joins kuril dhagun from DATSIP for a transitional period at SLQ. Stop by and say hello next time you are here!
Tell us about yourself?
I grew up in Mt Isa and have lived in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay and now Brisbane. I am a Mandingalbay Yidinji/Gunggandji woman from FNQ, with descendants from Hammond Island in the Torres Strait. I have four daughters ranging in age from 4-24 years old, with the eldest daughter’s also belonging to the Pitta Pitta (NWQ) and Kaytetye (central NT) language groups. I’ve been in the public service for approximately 15 years in four departments, with a few years in the private sector managing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander training college. I have worked in many roles within government, though have enjoyed working in the Equity and Diversity space the most, being involved with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander policy, programs and events.
What will you be doing at SLQ?
As a/Lead for kuril dhagun, I am responsible for leading the team in all of the activities that kd prides itself in achieving, as well as facilitating part of the transition within the new SLQ structure. The biggest challenge for me is learning the exhibition, curatorial and accession processes together with new jargon. Establishing new administrative procedures, reworking O Drive and increasing community participation are further challenges I hope to achieve during my time here.
What do you do in your spare time?
In my spare time, I like swimming in natural waterholes or at the beach, walking along the esplanade or playing with Skittles, my pet galah that I hand-reared after seeing her being hit by a car.
What do you hope to get out of your time at SLQ?
During my time at SLQ, I’m hoping to learn and grow both professionally and personally and I can say that this is most definitely happening. SLQ is a very different space to what I’m used to, though I’ve found all the people so friendly and willing to assist. It’s a great precinct to work in and I have one of the most efficient of teams working beside me.
