Young Musicians Research Workshop 2013

Young Musicians Research Workshop 2013

On Monday and Tuesday 20-21 May ten top Year 12 music students from all over Queensland came to State Library for the 2013 Young Musicians Research Workshop. The Workshop is a joint effort between State Library and the Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Day One began with an introduction to State Library staff and an address by Dr Ralph Hultgren, Director of the Open Conservatorium, as he discussed his doctoral research and explored creative method, compositional process and unexpected avenues music research can reveal. A highlight for the morning was a ‘white gloves’ session in which the students handled some of the heritage music material from the John Oxley Library collection.

The Workshop aims to help music students improve their research skills, and explores different search techniques, how to identify, access and interpret music resources, and what digital resources are available to them online at home. State Library provides a number of great music databases which the students interrogated to answer a series of questions. The afternoon of Day One involved a tour of the Live! Queensland Band Culture exhibition, and a mentoring session to assist with their own research topics.

Day Two began with a trip to the Queensland Conservatorium, and a presentation by Professor Peter Roennfeldt and Dr Brydie-Leigh Bartleet, who explored the career pathway of music research and described some of the interesting challenges and exciting discoveries they had made over the course of their careers. A tour of the Conservatorium followed, then back to State Library for more mentored time investigating individual research topics. All in all a very full two days!
