QANTAS’ first logbook

Qantas (Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited) was formally established on November 16, 1920, when papers were signed at the Gresham Hotel in Brisbane. The company was initially based in Winton. Qantas was formed by two former Australian Flying Corps officers, W Hudson Fysh and Paul McGinness.

State Library of Queensland is fortunate to hold Qantas’ first logbook for the first aircraft of the Western Queensland Auto Aero Service (Limited), company that later became Qantas. This aircraft log book details flights of and maintenance to Qantas aircraft registration G-AUBG between 1921 and 1932.

The log contains details such as:- the date, name and duty of crew on the aircraft, details of the journey, time in the air, total hours in the air logged progressively, approximate mileage, the number of passengers, the weight of cargo carried, remarks and repairs carried out with dates of commencement and completion of repairs. Qantas was inducted into the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame in 2009
