State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.
This real estate map from 1911 advertises 26 allotments of land for sale at the East Ipswich Station Estate in East Ipswich. The map also lists the names of owners of existing residences along York, Gibbon and Bennett Streets.
The allotments for sale were situated along Coronation Street, Gibbon Street, James Street and Bennett Street.
Ipswich newspaper, Queensland Times, featured advertisements publicising the sale…
“Almost adjoining the Railway Station on the higher side of the railway, with direct access to Station. Good train service. Nice elevation, grand open views”. (Queensland Times, July 7, 1911)
A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of July 8, 1911. The Queensland Times newspaper reported that all allotments were sold on auction day for a grand total of £1803 (approximately $233,000 today). The newspaper listed the purchaser of each property and their successful bid.
