Celebrate Queensland Multicultural Month in your library this August by raising awareness / highlighting the Languages Other Than English (LOTE) collection from State Library of Queensland. According to the 2016 ABS Census nearly half the Australian population were born overseas or have at least one parent who was born overseas. Over 300 ancestries were separately identified in the 2016 Census and approximately 28% of Australians currently speak a language other than English at home.
Over the last ten years the number of LOTE speakers has increased at a faster rate than the rate of increase in the population as a whole.
To serve our culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities, State Library has a LOTE) collection with over 50 languages from Arabic to Vietnamese. Our Multicultural Engagement Framework 2014-17 (MEF) highlights SLQ’s ongoing commitment to collaborate with CALD communities and external partners to provide access to knowledge, learning, creative experiences and employment.
Library materials in LOTE meet multiple needs amongst relevant communities including:
- supporting new migrants
- allowing established migrants and their families to retain cultural ties
- providing resources for students and temporary visitors.
Queensland public libraries that have community members who speak another language or who wish to learn another language are invited to borrow LOTE from State Library.
There are more than 70,000 items in the LOTE collection. Each language has a range of formats but all have adult fiction, non- fiction and resources for junior readers. Other formats include large print, DVDs, music and audiobooks. Some picture book resources are in parallel text. Ask for your preferred format in your next loan. See the LOTE collection prefix chart to find what formats are available in each language.
We have just received a number of new items in German, Afrikaans, Chinese, Croatian, Indonesian, Persian, Polish, Vietnamese, Sinhalese, Tagalog and Russian. Included are:
- Polish audiobooks
- Excellent Russian picture books and new fiction
- Hungarian DVDs
We supply MARC records for all LOTE loans and we ask you to add these to your catalogue promptly when received to improve discoverability for your customers.
The LOTE resources are for public library staff access only and are stored at the State Library facility at Cannon Hill in Brisbane. Libraries near Brisbane are welcome to visit and browse the collection to select their own resources, or staff can submit an online request form for each language required.
LOTE speakers comprise many groups with varying needs, levels of formal educational attainment and previous, or no, experience of library services. The Adult literacy collection which contains titles on learning English vocabulary, dictionaries, and entering the job market are available for LOTE speakers who want to improve their English. Complete an online request form to borrow from this collection.
To help you promote the LOTE collection in your community and to help celebrate Queensland Multicultural Month in August, we have developed a printable LOTE poster and flyer – just add your library or Council name to the editable section of the poster and flyer before printing.
The full range of LOTE is available on the RLQ catalogue. If you are searching for a particular language or genre, this how to guide can help you find it. To send in a request for a LOTE loan, complete the online form. Contact firstname.lastname@example.org
