Moreton Bay Regional Libraries building digital inclusion and literacy

Increasing access to collections and building digital inclusion and literacy in our communities, as well as attracting new and diverse audiences, is a priority focus for Moreton Bay Region Libraries.

Plextalk DAISY Player

Plextalk DAISY Player

We recently received a Micro Grant from State Library of Queensland to purchase a new suite of Plextalk DAISY Players. The Plextalk can read aloud books on CD or USB, read text and Word files, and can store digital Audiobooks on an SD card.

Having the Plextalks available to borrow throughout our 10 library branches will benefit those in our community with low vision or who are dyslexic, by increasing the accessibility of books, magazines and library resources. This simple device can quite literally change the lives of those with a visual impairment by increasing access to information that would otherwise be out of reach.

Library staff will support customers with one-on-one training to help them get familiar with the technology and make the most out of its features. Providing access to new technology and developing the digital literacy of our community in this way can help improve their quality of life and independence. We will ensure it gets to community members who will most benefit from the technology by showcasing its use during outreach to disability organisations, respite centres, aged care homes, and homebound library services.
