Advances in preserving visual history in the Banana Shire

Banana Shire Council Libraries received a $1,700 Realising Our Potential Micro Grant to fund the purchase of two Epson Perfection V800 Photo Scanners to enable digitisation of visual media (photos, film, slides and negatives).

The equipment will assist in the preservation of historical images and help keep a public record appropriate for historical societies, sporting clubs, community groups and individuals. The ability to digitally preserve visual media will also enable council to add to, and better preserve, part of its local history collection.

The scanners are based in Biloela and Taroom library branches, but as they are portable, we can move them to other branches within the shire when the demand arises.

It is still ‘early days’ since purchase but our aim is also to encourage users of the scanners to consider if their images are suitable for the 2019 Year of Outback Tourism Flickr project.
