The Very Hungry Caterpillar has munched his way through a range of delicious and colourful foods for more than 50 years. Published in 1969 the book has sold more than 50 million copies around the world and been translated into over 60 languages.

Eric Carle’s distinctive illustrations remain popular and timeless. The Very Hungry Caterpillar is one of the most popular and enduring picture books ever published.

Storytelling resources
To commemorate this milestone and to coincide with the International Year of Indigenous Languages State Library of Queensland supported by the Queensland Library Foundation has three new storytelling resources now available to all Queensland public library and Indigenous Knowledge Centres.

The storytelling resources are a great way to encourage talking, reading singing and playing during early literacy sessions in the library or lend them to parents and families, child care centres and kindergartens. The resources can also be used to help celebrate International Year of Indigenous Languages by exploring local language in early literacy sessions.

The kits include several versions of The Very Hungry Caterpillar including the 50th anniversary edition of the book, a big book with an accompanying soft toy as well as other titles on butterflies and caterpillars. There are also two kits with ten The Very Hungry Caterpillar board books for use in schools or wherever needed. Activity sheets with suggestions on how to use the resources during early literacy sessions for libraries accompany each kit.
