If you are studying or teaching any of these global themes, digital stories created by Queensland University of Technology (QUT) pre-service teachers provide excellent stimulus material.
Developed in collaboration with State Library of Queensland (SLQ) as part of The Global Teacher subject, the digital stories have been released under a Creative Commons license, making them a great source of locally-created content.
SLQ has supported The Global Teacher students to research their course work and prepare a culminating exhibition of digital narratives for assessment since 2013.
The students study how libraries represent historical and contemporary issues, social beliefs and practices, then present their interpretation of education problems and solutions in a framework that is both local and global.
In 2016, students explored the theme of Belonging through SLQ’s Queensland Faces exhibition by considering identity and ways of capturing self.
They also got hands-on with beginner robotics, with the opportunity to develop relevant teaching resources using Ozobots, miniature robots designed to learn basic coding in a fun and easy way.
As part of the process of globalisation, schools across the globe are undergoing a transition from being nation-centered to becoming institutions that engage with diversity in a more interconnected world.
The Global Teacher subject is included at QUT as part of the Bachelor of Education course because it helps educators prepare students to live and work interculturally, with a greater global understanding of socio-cultural, educational issues of planetary significance.
It provides them with the opportunity to study issues of diversity and sustainability at home and abroad, as well as the ability to interpret educational problems from a framework that is both local and global.
