Where can you use bananas to play the piano, learn a language playing Jenga, and screen print with the power of the sun, all for free? State Library of Queensland’s (SLQ) Fun Palace, that’s where.
Launched in the UK in 2014, Fun Palace is a convergence of ideas and currently includes over 290 separate happenings across the globe. Now in its third year at SLQ, over 20 on-site activities and events are planned for the Library’s day of fun on Saturday 7 October. In just four weeks, inventors, researchers, artists, performers, storytellers, and adventurers from across the community will converge on SLQ for a free, fun-filled day of exploration, experimentation and creativity.
Fun Palace is an exciting community initiative bringing together thinkers and creators of all ages, cultures, abilities and levels of expertise to encourage learning through play and experimentation. It’s interactive and community-led, and focuses on free art, science, craft and technology activities.
You can challenge your vocab in our life-size Scrabble, and learn urban Indigenous words and phrases at Message Stack, an interactive Jenga-style with a uniquely linguistics edge. Build your own computer game, make an interactive story with Kindergo, play a Makey Makey Banana Piano, and battle it out with Spinning Gears Robot Games…and that’s just before lunch!
This year we’re especially excited to announce that well-loved Australian science broadcast and author Dr Karl Kruszelnicki will be joining us. In a free talk, Dr Karl will investigate why kids are smarter than their parents; he will also offer his insights on the Library’s Digital Futures Lab, exploring how technology can help us thrive in a walk-through tour of this interactive exhibition.
Challenge your skills and your knowledge through exploration, experimentation and creativity, and contribute and collaborate to the biggest day of play across the world!
