The Corner at State Library of Queensland has a new theme!

Why not bring your family to visit the first new theme in The Corner for 2018, Children’s Picture Diaries?  You’ll find The Corner on level one at the State Library of Queensland (SLQ).  This play based learning environment is especially designed for children under 8 and their parents, carers and friends to enjoy and explore together. The current installation runs all March until the end of June 2018.

The Corner is free and it’s open every day from 10-3pm. You can join a facilitated arts activity with one of our Corner arts workers daily from 10-12pm.  There’s always something different!  It’s a space where children can make some noise, make some friends, make some art – and make The Corner all theirs!

In this amazing children’s play space you’ll find visually stimulating and exciting features to provoke your children’s interest. The variety of features means there’s always something to keep children and adults alike engaged for hours. The Corner is packed with child friendly props and resources to scaffold learning, interaction, creativity and play.

Children’s Picture Diaries brings to life artwork from the Barbara Piscitelli Children’s Art Archive held in the SLQ John Oxley Library. The collection has paintings by children from the Queensland communities of Cherbourg, Erub, Hopevale, Ipswich, Kelvin Grove and Poruma who wrote and painted about where they live, what they love and who they are. Linked to the Lifestyle exhibition in the SLQ Gallery which explores how Queenslanders live and play in the sunshine state, Children’s Picture Diaries in The Corner is full of play spaces that reflect Queensland children’s thoughts and images about their lives.

There are opportunities for fantasy and role play, construction, exploration and creativity encouraging children to learn about themselves and their lives. Working with our team of arts workers they are encouraged to reflect on the questions posed to the original child artists – Where do you live? What do you love? Who are you? The Corner has plenty of spaces for children to add their artwork to this growing installation.

The Children’s Picture Diaries theme is full of books that explore identity including some wonderful picture books, non-fiction books and books written and illustrated by children about their lives.
