Help us celebrate Wear It Purple Day!
We want to build a better world for LGBTQIA+ young people. That’s why State Library is supporting Wear It Purple Day on Friday 31 August 2018. Wear It Purple Day aims to empower rainbow young people and to ensure their health and wellbeing is respected. It is an international movement calling for an end to bullying of LGBTQIA+ teens. By wearing purple we encourage them to be proud of who they are. We support and stand by our LGBTQIA+ youth.
Libraries are public spaces that seek to welcome everyone, regardless of their gender, sexual identity or sexual preference. Creating a safe environment for LGBTQIA+ young people is part of State Library’s commitment to Engage Community through our diverse and inclusive programs, collections and spaces.
Did you know that State Library has LGBTQIA+ Young Adult (YA) novels in our collections? These are accessible in print and as ebooks. We promote ‘own voices’ and diverse books. Some of our Australian LGBTQIA+ Young Adult titles include:
- Amelia Westlake by Erin Gough [Ebook]
- Night Swimming by Steph Bowe
- Songs That Sound Like Blood by Jared Thomas [Ebook]
- Clancy of the Undertow by Christopher Currie
For Wear It Purple Day we encourage you to start tagging LGBTQIA+ items in our One Search catalogue so they are easier to find. You can use the tags #lgbtqia+ and #rainbow reads. See how many books you can tag and share with our communities.
We hope you will join us in celebrating Wear It Purple Day. Help us create a safer future for young people around the world.
