This week is Privacy awareness week (PAW) and the 10th anniversary of the adoption of the Information Privacy (IP) Act 2009 and the Right to Information (RTI) Act 2009 in Queensland. PAW also raises awareness within the community more generally about privacy and data protection, and encourages individuals to value and protect their personal information by being privacy aware every day.
In 2009 the RTI Act and IP Act started a fundamental shift in how government handles, uses and discloses information. Queensland moved to a push model where information is released proactively, unless there is a good reason not to, while protecting and respecting personal information.
As technology becomes more and more integrated into daily life, libraries can give people support around personal data privacy and are able to provide resources created by the Office of the Information Commissioner that can create a more aware community.
The IP Act is vital to the function of a democracy and as stated above Queensland has taken a proactive approach to the Right to Information by actively releasing information as soon it is legally and safely available. As a cultural institution we are very proud to be a caretaker of information and knowledge in Queensland.
Promotional activities will run from Privacy Awareness Week in May 2019 until Right to Information Day in September 2019. Throughout this period the Office of the Information Commissioner will be undertaking a number of campaigns such as ‘Tell us your story’ and ‘Did you know’. They will also be hosting an event in August which will include the Solomon Lecture and panel discussion. You can read more about it on their website.
In keeping with the theme for the week: ‘Build privacy into your everyday’, members of the community are also encouraged to think about how they can better protect their personal information, particularly when interacting online.
