State Library of Queensland has an extensive collection of historical maps of Queensland, some of which have been digitised and can be viewed online.
This real estate map from 1914 advertises 120 allotments of land for sale at the Jetty View Estate in Redcliffe. The allotments were situated along Silvester Street, Baldwin Street, Shields Street, Oxley Avenue, Prince Edward Parade and the Esplanade.
Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.
“120 glorious seaside allotments. The pick of Redcliffe, magnificent beach frontages, within seven minutes’ walk of the jetty.” (Telegraph, December 15, 1914)
A public auction was held at the site on the afternoon of Boxing Day, 1914. The Telegraph newspaper reported the results of the sale.
“Messrs Noble and Shortt report a very successful sale of the Jetty View Estate at Redcliffe, on Boxing Day, sales effected amounting to £1,748. There was a splendid attendance at the sale, the competition for the esplanade frontages being very keen, the highest price realised for one allotment being £115 [approximately $13,000 today].” (Telegraph, December 28, 1914)
