This real estate map from 1885 advertises 118 allotments of land for sale at Galloway’s Hill Estate, located today in the Brisbane suburbs of Hawthorne and Norman Park. The allotments were situated on Wendell Street, Waldo Street, Goff Street (now part of Wendell Street) and two unnamed roads (Hawthorne Road and Wynnum Road).
Prior to the sale extensive publicity was published in Brisbane newspapers.
“The position is as convenient as could be desired, being within about twenty minutes’ walk of the ferries at Kangaroo Point, whilst the healthiness of the locality is another feature of inestimable value.” (The Telegraph, September 24, 1885)
The public auction was to held at the ground on the afternoon of October 3, 1885. The results of the sale were published in The Telegraph newspaper.
“Messrs Arthur Martin and Co. report a highly successful sale of the Galloway’s Hill Estate. There was a very fair attendance of bona fide buyers; 72 allotments were sold, at prices ranging up to £245 each, the whole averaging over £90 each; total amount of sale, £6,518. (The Telegraph, October 5, 1885)
